The category led with escape, so we dove all in on reconnection. Read on for the story of naming and positioning Waybound around what travelers truly seek.

Delaware North had a hospitality offering with momentum and a name that limited its potential: Explorer Cabins. "Cabins" set the expectation at four walls, when the need was a brand — one that could scale across locations, hold more experiences, and foster deeper connections. To grow, the offering needed to own the space between a hotel and an Airbnb (more flexible and independent than a hotel room, with more consistency and programming than an Airbnb).
Our competitive dive revealed that that space was already crowded, with everyone in it selling the same promise: escape, disconnection, getting away, all wrapped in the similar sleek, Instagrammable sheen and "bespoke, curated, concierge" language. The human truth opened a new door. People say they want to disconnect. But we're already disconnected — from ourselves, our people, the world outside the door — every single day. Plus, the benefits of “disconnection” disappear the second you plug back into work after a trip. What people actually crave is reconnection–something that stays with you long after your return home.
The Brave Idea
We gave the brand an emotional purpose to work toward: reconnect you to yourself, your people, and the world around you. Not another getaway from life, but a way back into it. The promise made it real: remove the distractions of inconvenience and inconsistency to make space for connection. The Inspiring Field Guide persona informed brand actions and behaviors, while the community, the Disconnected Hopeful, continually grounded us in the human need we were meeting.
Then we freed the brand from its old name. We generated hundreds of candidates across multiple strategic territories, and landed on Waybound. Bound to find new ways of being, new paths to travel. Forward motion built into the word itself — a name sized for a whole portfolio, not a single cabin in the woods.
Waybound entered the world as Waybound Yosemite, the first property in the new brand, set just outside Yosemite National Park. Refined guest havens, a reimagined clubhouse, a new pool experience, and elevated food and beverage now give the promise a physical home. The brand that began as Explorer Cabins has its first place to stand — and room to grow.
